Equipment Simulators

At METECS, we are leveraging our extensive simulation and training system experience to develop a line of equipment simulators to support commercial and military applications. These simulators are targeted for operator training, as well as marketing support across multiple disciplines including construction and farming. Once fielded, they promise to reduce the cost and risk associated with training on actual equipment and provide a cost-effective means for demonstrating new machines and capabilities to support marketing efforts.

Analysis Simulations

Using many of the tools described above, METECS has developed a multitude of ultra-high fidelity simulations designed for engineering analysis of complex physical systems. Often these simulations are run in a non-realtime, Monte Carlo fashion to parameterize stability, loads, constraint forces, and other data paramount to understanding the true performance, safety, and functionality of the system in question.

Integrated Simulation Design Challenges to Support TPS Repair Operations (AIAA GN&C, 2005) is an example of how METECS collaborated with NASA to work through the design challenges involved in simulating Orbiter Repair Maneuver (ORM) contingency operations for analysis, which involves modeling the dynamics of the ISS, SRMS, SSRMS, and an EVA crew person. Another analysis simulation example is the fully-flexible Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) simulation integrated with high fidelity berthing contact and mechanism models. This simulation is used to certify station berthing operations for essentially all berthed SSRMS payloads and mechanisms.

Integration

With our broad-based skill set, METECS is adept at efficiently integrating disparate simulation software and hardware elements into a complete simulation solution. This is of particular importance when coordinating a large simulation or simulator with developers from different companies and government agencies. Because METECS retains a healthy balance of historical experience and cutting edge knowledge we are uniquely qualified to break down the barriers which typically bog down integration efforts.

Specific integration examples include interfacing berthing contact and mechanism models (i.e. EFBM, CAS, CBM) developed by one company with space robotics simulations developed by another. In many cases the models were written in different languages and on multiple platforms. Other integration examples include:

  • EDGE graphics with existing customer simulations
  • Actual flight software models with existing space robotic simulators (i.e. SRMS, SSRMS, SPDM)
  • Charlotte mass handling robot with space robotic simulators (i.e. SRMS, SSRMS)
  • Novint Falcon force feedback robot for use a translation hand controller
  • Interfacing Pong based contact models in multiple existing simulations
  • Terrain, overlays, and 3D models with existing Orion Pad Abort 1 simulation
